Hiking is a great way to get outside and move around. It’s also an opportunity to explore new places. Here’s a look at some of our favorite place
Kane Woods Nature Area
The Kane Woods Nature Area (1461 Scrubgrass Road) is a beautiful spot for a weekend hike with your family. According to Pittsburgh Magazine, it’s the largest green space in all of Scott Township. It’s kid friendly, you can bring your dogs, and it’s a great two mile hike for people of all abilities.
Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve
The Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve (614 Dorseyville Road, Fox Chapel) is listed as an easy hike and is just a few minutes outside downtown. Unfortunately, Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve is not dog friendly, but it is kid friendly. The trail is known for its multiple species of birds and other unique wildlife. There is also a portion of the trail that is handicap accessible.
Three Rivers Heritage Trail
The Three Rivers Heritage Trail is the perfect place to take friends visiting from out of town. You can park free down by the river in the South Side, and take the trail all the way into downtown. The 24-mile trail is both kid friendly and dog friendly! Along the way, you’ll see Heinz Field, PNC Park and many other great views of the Steel City. If you’re looking for views, this is the trail for you.
The Monongahela Incline is located just over the Smithfield Street Bridge near Station Square. Sure, you can take the incline up and down, but did you know there’s also a two-mile trail with breathtaking views of the city? It’s a bit hilly in some spots. The trail is kid friendly and dog friendly.
Already conquered these four trails?
An experienced Pittsburgh hiker may already know about these four. But if you’re looking for a few more trails to navigate, then check out this awesome resource from Pittsburgh Magazine. You won’t be disappointed. Happy Hiking!
