Exercising with Joint Pain

Staying fit when experiencing joint pain can feel like an uphill battle. However, there are plenty of modifications you can make to your workout routine to better accommodate your physical status. Exercising the right way is so important. Not taking care could lead to new issues, or making existing pain that much worse. Consider a few of these tips before your next workout.

Before Your Workout

As with any workout, stretching is key. This is especially important when experiencing joint or back pain. Give your body time to acclimate to the workout. Don’t surprise it by jumping right into your routine.


Along with simple, pre-workout stretching, applying heat to troublesome joints may also be a good idea. Warmth can help to relax muscles and joints and stave off pain. Heating pads and hot towels work well, as does a warm shower. You should spend about 15 minutes applying heat before you begin your workout.

Low Impact Workouts

Again, pushing yourself too hard could ultimately lead to worse pain. It’s important to know your body’s limitations, even if they don’t match up with your brain’s idea of a solid workout. Low impact workouts put far less strain on your joints, muscles and back. Stationary machines, such as exercise bikes and ellipticals, are great options. Water-based workouts are also easy on joint pain.

When working out, remember to go slowly. A nice, slow pace allows your body to operate in a manageable rhythm without putting unnecessary strain on your joints or back. No matter what pace at which you’re going, don’t forget to listen to your body. It will tell you when it’s done. Take a break or call it day when you start to feel pain. If pain feels worse than usual, stop and call your doctor.

After Your Workout

It’s easy to neglect a post-workout routine. We’re tired and want to rest. However, not giving your body the proper attention during the cooldown phase could leader to bigger problems down the road.

Stretch out just like you did before working out and ice any joints that look swollen. If you haven’t worked out in a while, you may feel a little sore. If this soreness seems severe to you or doesn’t subside, call your doctor.
