Why Wellness Works

One of the best things about chiropractic is that we have a strong model for true “Wellness Care”. Much of our healthcare system is focused on waiting until we have symptoms, sickness, or a disease and then trying to work backwards into getting the patient well again. In chiropractic, the main focus is on prevention and function… essentially staying in front of any potential problems so that the patient doesn’t get sick or have symptoms. Aside from feeling better there are some other “perks” to using chiropractic to stay healthy. Here are the big ones:

  • Costs – The costs of healthcare and medications are constantly increasing. As our population ages, the demand on insurance companies to pay for more services is increasing. So, in response, we’re being met with higher premiums, higher deductibles, more out of pocket expense, and fewer services being covered. Using chiropractic, which is usually more affordable than other types of services, can save you money on doctors’ visits, tests, drugs, and surgeries.
  • Function – Most of our bodies have been through enough that our structures have changed on the inside. Over time these misalignments cause degenerative changes in the joints, nerves, and muscles. Those structure changes can drastically alter the way our bodies function. When our function is compromised we can’t work, play, or live how we want. Covering up those symptoms with medications doesn’t improve our structure or function. Chiropractic works to improve the function of the body as a whole.
  • Decreased Risk – In repeated studies chiropractic has been shown to be safe and effective for many conditions and every type of person. The risks of having a chiropractic adjustment are far lower than taking medications.

Chiropractic is a natural choice for anyone who is looking to restore or preserve their health. Studies have consistently shown that people who get adjusted at regular intervals take less medicine and have fewer surgeries than people who are not under chiropractic treatment. In order to be proactive with your health, rather than waiting to get sick, we highly recommend regular adjustments as part of your healthy life plan.

“Our health is what we make of it– give it attention and it improves, give it none and it subsides.”

– John F. Demartini

Traveling Can Be a Pain in the Neck…or Back!

Traveling over the holidays can cause aches and pains, especially in the back and neck. Whether you’re riding in the car or traveling in an airplane, sitting in a fixed position for long periods of time can be hard on your joints. In addition, travel can cause stress that leads to muscle tension and more aches and pains. Knowing how to avoid this problem can help you enjoy the coming holiday season.

  • Get an Adjustment Before Leaving. Your chiropractor should be able to identify subluxations and problems with your spine before you leave on your trip. Getting an adjustment before you go will relieve pressure on your joints and muscles, thus lessening your pain. In addition, your chiropractor can teach you exercises and stretches that you can do while on your vacation. These stretches and exercises can help improve blood flow to your muscles and help you avoid pain. Your chiropractor may also be able to recommend a special travel pillow to support your spine while you’re out of town.
  • Take Frequent Breaks When Driving. If you’re taking a long car ride, stop the car often to stretch and move around. This will prevent your muscles from getting stiff and painful while traveling to your destination. If you are traveling with a companion, take turns driving to avoid aches and pains.
  • Get Up and Walk Around When Flying. If you’re flying to your destination get up to take a brief walk every hour to hour and a half. If possible, ask for an aisle seat to make this easier for you and less annoying to your fellow travelers. Walking around on the plane will prevent your muscles from becoming stiff, so you’ll feel better when you arrive.
  • Manage Your Stress. Holiday stress can contribute a great deal to muscle tension, pain, stiffness, and injury. Managing your stress can help you avoid this discomfort. Your chiropractor will be able to recommend strategies for managing stress at this difficult time of year.
  • Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can make your problems feel more overwhelming and less manageable. Get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night through the holidays, especially before you travel.
  • Eat right. Green, leafy vegetables, dark chocolate, and blueberries are all foods that can help regulate your mood and improve your outlook around the holidays, but these aren’t the only foods that can help you feel better and stay happy during the holidays. A healthy diet can reduce stress and improve your mood while you’re away.
  • Exercise. Exercise prompts your body to produce endorphins, which can make you feel better and reduce your stress. Exercising throughout the holidays is important for managing stress, especially while traveling. Wherever you go, bring your running shoes and sweat clothes to make exercising an option while you’re away.
