These Signs Mean You Should Talk to a Chiropractor

A lot of small cues can tell you that your body is losing its healthy balance. Chiropractic is not just for pain and injuries, it helps your body function and stay well.  A recent blog post on our website discussed signs that may indicate that chiropractic care could help you. Here’s some to look for:

You Rely on Over the Counter Medicines
Using medicine on a regular basis (once a week or more) to keep your body comfortable is a sign that things are not working right. Often we think it’s harmless but over time, medicine can have damaging side effects and can mask a more serious issue. Chiropractors work with non-invasive and natural techniques to help decrease or eliminate pain.

You Call Off Sick A Lot
What does being sick have to do with chiropractic? A lot! A body that’s misaligned has a stressed nervous system. A stressed nervous system creates immune system issues. It’s the perfect storm… and then you’re sick a lot. Chiropractic helps reduce nervous system stress.  Start with that basic step, decreasing the nervous system stress and a lot of people just get sick less often or get better faster than they had in the past.

You’re Having Sleep Problems
Millions of people lose sleep every year and the #1 reason is body pain. Chiropractic can decrease pain and your chiropractor can make suggestions about sleep position and nutrition to help improve your sleep naturally.

An initial consultation is generally 45 to 60 minutes and a fantastic opportunity for you to learn about his approach and what you may be able to achieve to reach you personal goals. Jeremy has helped dozens of our patients lose weight, lower their cholesterol and blood pressure, and feel better on a day-to-day basis.

Stretches Every Chiropractic Patient Will Love

If you’re a patient at a chiropractic office, you know how important it is to do stretches and exercises throughout the week. Stretching your muscles can help improve your circulation, prevent injuries, improve your coordination, and improve your resistance to illnesses.

These stretches will help you get through life in greater comfort, with less risk of injury and illness. 

Child’s Pose
To do this stretch, kneel on the ground and then bend forward until your face is resting gently on the floor. Put your arms at your side or over your head in a Superman stretch. This pose is good for stretching the lower back and opening the hips. We recommend doing this at the end of a long day, before you go to bed. You can start with 30 seconds and go longer as you get used to it.

Bound Angle Stretch 
This is a pose that opens up your hips and groin. This pose is also good for fertility and can give a stretch up the length of your back. We recommend doing Bound Angle in the morning.

Sit on the floor and bring the soles of your feet together. Bend your knees and lower them to the floor. Don’t lower them any farther than is comfortable. Next, place your palms on the floor in front of you and inch your hands forward as far as is comfortable. Keep your back straight. Hold this for 30 seconds.  

Standing Side Stretch 
This pose helps realign the spine and keep the body in balance. To do the standing side stretch, put your arms straight and clasp your hands together above your head. Point your pointer fingers at the ceiling. Bend your body to the left so that your pointer fingers are pointing skyward and subtly to the left. Hold the pose. Next, straighten your body so your pointer fingers are pointing straight up above you. After that, bend to the right and repeat the process.

What I Learned in Chiropractic School That I Don’t Use

We asked Dr. Shannon and Dr. Ashley to share some of what they learned in chiropractic school but haven’t actually used in practice. Here are their responses:

Dr. Shannon-
“When I went to chiropractic school I really didn’t know what I would be learning. I was surprised to find that our curriculum was very similar to the curriculum in medical school. This was a good thing because we were trained on all systems of the body, just like a primary care doctor. I ended up learning a lot of awesome stuff, especially in the anatomy lab (where you live for hours and hours a week the first year of school) and in my adjusting labs. Truth be told, my hardest class was biochemistry where we learned the “Kreb’s Cycle”, which shows how the body produces energy. Kreb’s Cycle over and over….and over and over. I have never used Kreb’s Cycle any day of my life in practice. But I do love teaching patients about the other things I learned, especially if it can help them get better.”

Dr. Ashley-
“Taking an Anatomy and Physiology class as a senior in high school is what made me decide to study the human body as part of my higher education. My time spent reading, re-creating in my own way different parts of the body to easily understand origin, insertion, action, etc. Many, many late nights in the cadaver lab are all very relevant in my day to day practice to properly examine and treat patients, as well as teach them how to do rehabilitative activities on their own. I realize the hours and hours I spent in chiropractic school memorizing microbiology organisms and the “foreign language” of biochemistry is not something I have ever used a day in practice, but I am grateful for my knowledge in Anatomy and Physiology among other things to share my expertise with our patients to help them live the best lives possible.”
