Active Seniors Rock Our World!

Some of our most inspiring patients are the active seniors who come to stay healthy using chiropractic treatment. Over the years they’ve shared some of their secrets to staying healthy. We would now like to share them with you:

Keep Moving-
Your body literally needs movement to stay alive. It keeps your brain, joints, and heart healthy. Many of the seniors we see at the start of treatment aren’t moving very much because they are stiff or sore, or they lack energy. Chiropractic decreases pain and improves energy…so you feel like doing more.

Stay Social-
Getting out and seeing friends and family is energizing. The more you maintain relationships with friends and family, the better your outlook on life. If you haven’t seen someone in a while make it a point to give them a call or invite them to lunch. It will be good for both of you.

Don’t Rely on Pills-
Often people will say that they don’t want to be taking all of the pills they’re taking. Often, they also have fears about the side effects. But they keep doing it because they’re afraid not to or they’re in too much pain when they stop. It’s a frustrating cycle. The real truth is that you can work on changing your health a little bit at a time and, over time, your doctor may be able to reduce your medications for you. Chiropractic patients typically take fewer medications than other people because the adjustment helps them feel better.

Ask For Help When You Need It-
It is natural over time to lose some strength, struggle a bit with balance, need more rest, etc., etc. You’ll be surprised by by how often people are willing to lend a hand.

If you’re an active senior and want to make the most of your health, chiropractic is a natural way to do so. Let us help you be the best that you can be!

Who’s in Control of Your Healthcare Choices?

Dr. Ashley-
“Who knows your body best? YOU. Only you truly know what helps you feel good and what you need from a healthcare standpoint to allow you to live your best life. Cookie cutter insurance company approaches aren’t built on getting you well and making sure you stay that way forever. This is why we all need to do ourselves a favor and LISTEN. Not only listen to our bodies, but educate ourselves to all of our options– sometimes outside of the popular “medical model” recommendations.

Seek those whose advice is specific for you, not based on your coverage or number of visits they will or won’t pay for. As we jump into Spring it’s time to reflect on who’s in our healthcare driver’s seat. And, if it’s not you, let’s switch seats and take control!”

Dr. Shannon-
“I think that Dr. Ashley is right on point. One of the most dangerous things that you can do is put your health into the hands of the insurance companies or the pharmaceutical industry. You cannot be passive and expect to be alive and have a good quality of life. The patients that are the best advocates for their health are the ones that have a “hands-on and can-do” attitude about their health. They value it, protect it, and invest in it. Chiropractic is one of those investments that pays off over the years in regards to quality of life and function. You need to decide what you’re going to do for YOU and stick to it. Your are your own best advocate!”

How Chiropractic Can Help Seniors Stay Active

Many seniors face challenges that can cause musculoskeletal pain, which makes staying active difficult. Chiropractors can help older adults maintain flexible joints and muscles while reducing their pain. They can also help their patients engage in lifestyle changes to help them stay energetic.

The Challenges of Staying Active:
Illness and chronic conditions can make staying active difficult. The less patients exercise, the more difficult exercise becomes. Patients who undergo invasive surgeries with long recovery times may also find returning to an activity even more challenging.

Safe, Gentle Care for Musculoskeletal Pain:
Chiropractors offer a plethora of services to older patients. These include:

  • Spinal adjustments. These help treat conditions like arthritis, subluxations, back pain, neck pain, and injuries. Adjustments also realign the spine and improve the function of the nervous system. This boosts the immune system, reduces pain, prevents injury, and speeds healing times.
  • Stretches and exercises. Chiropractors teach patients to do stretches and exercises that can improve joint and muscle flexibility.
  • Nutrition counseling. Seniors who want to exercise must eat the right foods. We can help you choose the right foods to lose weight, maintain a healthy weight, and stay physically active.
  • Lifestyle advice. A healthy lifestyle can be achieved by staying active around the house, in the yard, and performing everyday tasks. Chiropractors help patients find ways to stay active in their personal life, to make exercising easier overall.
A Tailored Experience:
One of the benefits of chiropractic is that there are so many methods to help patients reach their health goals. Some techniques involve greater force, while others are lower force for increased comfort. Chiropractic is non-invasive and involves no medications. Chiropractic is often safer than traditional methods of treatment. In addition, chiropractors are specially trained to work with patients of all ages, from the youngest baby to the oldest senior.

Seniors Can Save Money (and Add Years of Happiness)!

With the Trump administration  releasing the new health insurance plans for Medicare and Medicaid we need to look at health differently. The Medicare population is going to see increasing costs over the next 15 years. Let’s take a look at what this means locally:

Pennsylvania has the fourth highest percentage of residents 65 and older, just behind Florida, West Virginia, and Maine, according to U.S. Census.
29% of the population of Pennsylvania will be Medicare age by 2030.

The median cost of an assisted living residence or personal care home in Pennsylvania is $3,600 a month for a one-bedroom unit, translating to an annual cost of $43,200.
The poverty rate rose with age among the elderly, from 11% for 65 to 74-year-olds to 16% for those 75 and older.

What this means is that the poverty level is going to increase, with more people depending on Medicare. With so many eligible participants upcoming, the premiums are going to rise and fewer benefits will be offered. This will increase the death rate because some people won’t be able to afford treatment for some illnesses.

We need to make the decision to change how the system affects us. Here are some studies to show why chiropractic is a wise health investment:

  • A 2009 study showed that the most cost-effective way to treat lower back pain in people 55 and over is chiropractic.
  • A study that looked into prescribed medications versus spinal manipulations found that 56% of patients who saw a doctor experienced a 30% reduction in low back pain after 4 weeks. 94% of the patients treated with chiropractic saw the same results, without medications.
  • The U.S. government alone spends $496 million on chiropractic services through Medicare, only .06% of the entire $77 billion Medicare budget.
  • Chiropractic saves, on average, 45-55% in total costs compared to treatment by medical doctors or surgeries.

Replacing doctor visits for back pain with chiropractic could save Medicare $83.5 million every year! Now, more than ever, is the time to invest in your health!
