Chiropractic Tips For Summertime Pain

Summer is a time when people become active and engage in outdoor activities. While this makes summer fun, it can also be a time of physical hazards. Injuries become more common in the summer than at other times of the year.

What Causes Summertime Pain?
Summertime pain is caused by a variety of activities. Everything from gardening to sports, running, walking, and swimming can result in muscle injuries and pain. Sometimes these occur because of poor technique, like twisting incorrectly at the torso or lifting with your back instead of your legs. Other times these occur when you try to do too much at once.

What Are the Most Common Summertime Aches?

  • Knee injuries. Runner’s Knee is an issue that occurs because of an imbalance in the muscles that control the knee and thigh. Knee injuries can happen as a result of running, walking, squatting, and other knee-intensive activities.
  • Plantar Fasciitis. This heel injury most often occurs in runners. People who suffer from it experience this problem when the muscle on the bottom of the foot becomes overstretched.
  • Rotator Cuff. This occurs as a result of engaging in the same repetitive shoulder motion over and over again. Rotator cuff injuries are common in patients who have been painting over the summer and in patients who have been swimming.

What Can Your Chiropractor Do To Help?
We can use a variety of techniques to help you recover from these injuries. We can also help you avoid the same injuries again in the future. Some of the most common chiropractic techniques include:

  • Spinal Adjustments. Adjustments help loosen tight muscles, restore mobility, relieve pain, and help patients recover from injuries. Nearly every type of injury that a patient may experience can be treated through spinal adjustments.
  • Stretches and Exercises. Many people develop injuries while performing activities in the summer because they haven’t properly warmed up or their muscles aren’t strong enough for the task at hand. Your chiropractor can help you by teaching you to perform stretches and exercises. These can help you get ready for a long summer of hard work and physical activity.
  • Nutrition Advice. Eating right can help you better train for activities and sports, and can also energize your muscles so that you’ll be in a better place to engage in physical activity.

Know Where To Go, What To Do

Warm weather is on its way! At this time of year, many Pittsburgh residents start looking for ways to get active and stay in shape by getting outdoors. Fortunately our city is full of opportunities for people of all ages to do just that.

Walking is one of the best forms of physical activity because it’s easy on the joints, good for the heart, and easy to do in groups. It’s perfect for people who want to start getting regular exercise or turn their exercise into a social activity. There are many places to pick a trail and see the great outdoors in and around Pittsburgh. Here are some trails to check out:

  • August Wilson stroll around Pittsburgh. This stroll around Pittsburgh is five miles long and covers points around the city that were important to August Wilson. The trail is dog-friendly, kid-friendly, and good for in-shape city-dwelling seniors. The trailhead begins at Corner Monument, located at Centre Avenue and Crawford Street.
  • Whiskey Point to commemorate the march of the “Whiskey Boys”. The two-mile trail is notable for its wildflowers and wild turkey in warmer weather. Bring the kids to this fun nature hike located at 1461 Scrubgrass Road, Scott Township.
  • Jennings Trail, Raccoon State Park Wildflower Reserve. The perfect place to be in the late spring or early summer, this five-mile long trail is bursting with wildflowers at the right time of year. Bring the kids, but be aware that this trail has some up and down climbing that gets the heart pumping. It’s located at 482 Route 30, Independence Township, Beaver County.

One of the best things you can do to make sure that you can enjoy outdoor activities as much as possible is see your chiropractor before and after exercise!

With regular adjustments, chiropractic can help with pain and tension related to injuries or exercise. Seeing the chiropractor can help prevent pain and injury as well.

We hope that you all have a wonderful summer filled with lots of time spent in the sunshine being active. Just remember, we are here to help you enjoy it to your fullest by staying as healthy as possible.

From the Doctors
My Moment of Pure Joy as a Chiropractor

Dr. Shannon-
“When I became a chiropractor I didn’t realize that there would be so many times that I would be struck with moments of pure joy in relation to my work with my patients. I think the first time I was super amazed with chiropractic was in my first three months of practice when one of my pregnant patients found out that her baby was in a breech position. Her last pregnancy ended up with a C-Section delivery and she was trying to avoid that. I was trained in Webster Technique, which is chiropractic adjustment that helps breech babies turn.

We decided to try it; but I was working under a tight timeline because her OB scheduled her for a C-Section six days out! Normally with Webster you adjust the patient every other day until the baby turns (which only gave me three adjustment to work with). I adjusted her, she got off the table and went home. The next day she had a follow-up with her OB and the doctor said, “whatever she did…IT WORKED!”. The client called my office and told my assistant. I asked, “are you SURE???”. My assistant asked her again and the patient just started laughing and said “YES!”. I started clapping and crying. It was proof of the power of chiropractic and it was awesome! As an aside…the patient had a healthy delivery and had a beautiful baby boy.”

It is a joy to treat all of you!

Dr. Ashley-
“ I feel fortunate that I can’t choose one defining moment of pure joy. Rather, I am proud to report that I have had several “joyous” moments in my short career thus far:

  • “Thank you for getting me out of pain so I could dance at my wedding.”
  • “I feel like a million bucks!”
  • “This is the first time I’ve slept through the night in months.”
  • “No one else could help me. Thank you.”

These are a few standout moments of joy I’ve experienced. If it wasn’t for hard work, practice, patience, building relationships, and learning from mentors, I know I wouldn’t have so many joyous moments to date.

Summer is coming and we all want to feel our best. Now is the time to encourage your friends and family to take the next step in caring for themselves. I look forward to meeting them in the office!”
