It’s 2:30 p.m. You’ve been working hard on a project all day. You’ve completely forgotten the fact that you haven’t moved since getting a coffee refill four hours ago. You even brought a lunch and took it out of your bag and ate it at your desk while you worked. Now, imagine doing that 5 days a week for years. Spoiler alert: It’s not great for you.
The Side Effects of Sitting All Day
Sitting all day is rough. If you’re not actively making it a point to get up and move around once per hour, the side effects will compound over time, and by the time you notice them it will be too late.
The more active you are throughout the day, the better. However, running around all day doesn’t pay the bills. The Washington Post published an article a few years ago outlining the scary side effects of sitting all day. Here are a few of them:
- Heart disease
- Over Productive Pancreas
- Colon Cancer
- Mushy Abs
- Bad Back
- Sore Shoulders
- Strained Neck
- Foggy Brain
- Tight Hips
- Poor circulation
Ok, I’ll stop scaring you. While it’s true that some people are more prone to these conditions than others, the common denominator here is sitting at a desk all day. There is good news, though.
How to Stay Active and Still Be Productive at Work
The obvious thing to do here is to just get up and move around about once per hour. If you wear a smartwatch, it may even remind you when it’s time to get up and move around. Set a goal and hit that goal everyday. If you work eight-hour days, you should get up and move around at least six times throughout the day to help keep the blood flowing. I
It’s also important to make sure you’re sitting the correct way. If you’re slouched over with bad posture, it’s not going to do you any favors – no matter how many times you get up and move around. When sitting:
- Don’t lean (forward or backward)
- Keep your shoulders relaxed
- Don’t spread your arms out too far
- Keep your feet flat on the floor
If you really want to make the most of your office space, consider sitting on a medicine ball, or get a standing desk. These two things will certainly keep you on your toes. Literally.
