Between the cold weather and all of the running around we do this time of year, keeping active can seem like a real chore. Luckily, the Pittsburgh area has plenty of ways for you to enjoy the holiday season while getting up and moving around!
Ice Skating at PPG Place
PPG Place is the epicenter of the Pittsburgh holiday season, and the focal point is definitely the ice skating rink that appears around the fountain every year. Not only is skating at PPG a Pittsburgh holiday tradition, it’s a great way to get up and moving!
Enjoy the sites and sounds of the season all while getting in a little exercise. Ice skating is a great way to work on your leg muscles and overall balance, all while providing a great cardio workout and maybe even helping your joints. If you’ve never been to PPG Place for ice skating, now’s your chance!
Explore the Sites of Downtown Pittsburgh
Don’t rush home when you’re done ice skating! Downtown Pittsburgh has so many holiday attractions to explore. Taking a stroll through the Central Business District is a great way to experience the magic of the season while getting your steps.
Just a block from the skating rink is the Pittsburgh Christmas Market. This annual takeover of Market Square offers plenty of crafts, holiday decor, live music and yummy food to enjoy while you walk around. Beyond the Christmas Market, make sure to check out the tree in Point State Park or visit the Nativity scene at the U.S. Steel Building on Grant Street. No matter which direction you head in, you’re sure to find the holiday spirit in Pittsburgh!
Nationality Rooms at the Cathedral of Learning
Once you’ve finished up Downtown, head east to the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. The bottom level of the historic building features the Nationality Rooms that each depict a typical classroom from countries around the world. The best part is, each room gets its own decorations for the holidays.
Explore new cultures as your walk through the Cathedral and experience the holiday cheer on a global scale. Then head out into Oakland for a stroll around the campus grounds, up Forbes Ave and Craig Street, or even through Frick Park. Oakland is a wonderful neighborhood to explore on foot and a festive way to get up and moving around.
