The first day of autumn is quickly approaching, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a jump on enjoying the season with your family. Not surprisingly, Pittsburgh and the surrounding environs offer a plethora of family-friendly activities that promise fun and festivity. Here are a few of favorites:
- Ligonier Highland Games
Head to Idlewild Park in nearby Ligonier for the 60th-anniversary edition of the Ligonier Highland Games. Not only will you and your family feel like you’ve transported to a Scottish forest, thanks to the soaring pines and rolling hills of Idlewild Park, you’ll also be treated to melodic music, dance and drumming competitions, agility shows, great feats of skill and strength and more!
- Science Sleepovers
Who says sleepovers are just for kids? Pack up your pajamas and your sleeping bags before heading over to Carnegie Science Center for one of their Science Sleepovers. The theme for Friday, October 26, is “Spooky Science,” while the November 16th event will follow a “Light Up Night” theme. Enjoy themed activities, a live theater show, continental breakfast and free admission to the museum the following Saturday.
- Duquesne Incline
If you’re looking for an activity that combines the beauty of fall foliage and breathtaking views of Pittsburgh’s skyline, pack up the family and head to the historic Duquesne Incline. Once you arrive at the upper station, browse through the museum that offers a glimpse of the city’s history, and the gift shop where you’ll find unique items for sale. Don’t forget to buy the family ice cream cones at DiFiore’s while you enjoy the fabulous view!
Randyland is the brainchild of Randy Gilson, who sought to bring color and happiness to Pittsburgh. Using upcycled materials and lots of ingenuity, Randy created what is regarded by many people as the most colorful public art museum. Stroll through the garden, climb the psychedelic steps and see what’s reflected in the mirror wall.
