The summer is a great time to get up, move around and do just about anything you can outdoors. Luckily, that long brutal winter is behind us. However, it can be easy to overdo it during the first few weeks of summer. A proper stretching routine will keep you active and injury free all summer long!
Stretchhhhhhhhh it out!
A stretching routine is a great way to start your mornings and end your evenings. There are books upon books about the benefits of stretching, but the sad truth is stretching is often overlooked. Whether you went for a 30-minute run, played a game of tennis or just played a round of golf, stretching is the key to preventing injuries.
Ever pull a hamstring trying to beat your best 5k time, or pull a muscle in your back trying to reach the green on that brutally long par-3? Make sure you’re stretching. The more you stretch, the more flexible you are. The more flexible you are the easier it is to perform at high level.
What stretches should I do and when should I do them?
A great way to jump-start your morning is to jump out of bed, chug a glass of water, and run through a 10-15 minute stretching routine. You can literally do it while your coffee is brewing! Every day, focus on each part of your body and you’ll feel much better. Here are morning stretch staples:
- Bend over and touch your toes to stretch your hamstring
- Put your hand on the middle of your back and pull your arm back to stretch your triceps
- Do the butterfly stretch to gain flexibility in your hips, glutes, back and thighs
- Perform a lunging hip flexor stretch
These are just some to incorporate into your morning routine. Find what works for you and be consistent. Stretching isn’t an overnight process. It takes time. If you commit to being more flexible, it will happen over time. Trust us!
