Stress as a Motivator

How many of us have the luxury of a stress-free life? Though it’s something most of us desire it is hard to find in our fast-paced world. When companies do studies on the health of their workers the #1 concern time and time again is stress.

Stress isn’t all bad. In fact, if used properly, it can help us escape danger, think fast, and get projects finished on time. Our body has a part of the nervous system explicitly dedicated to getting us ready to deal with stressful situations. It is called the “sympathetic” system, also known as “fight or flight”. When this system is activated by being exposed to stress, certain chemicals, or spinal nerve irritation, several changes occur. These changes include:

  • Increased heart rate and breathing
  • Increased muscle tension
  • Increased blood pressure and blood flow to our arms and legs

All of these changes will persist to some degree as long as the stress remains. You should be aware that things other than just our life or external stressors can cause these changes.

Stress in Chiropractic Patients

As chiropractors, we see patients who have spinal misalignment and irritation in the areas associated with the “fight or flight” system that have chronic stress symptoms.

Conversely, because stress causes tight muscles, a lot of people have spinal misalignment and muscle tension, knots, and pain because their own muscles pull their vertebra out of place.

It is estimated that 90% of all the illnesses we suffer in the United States are stress-related, including heart attacks, stokes, cancers, and obesity. Managing stress levels is an essential part of any healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, a lot of people attempt to control stress using a variety of medications and also by self-medicating with alcohol and drugs.
